Week 5 (03/02/25)

This week was the fifth week of my Jian Sword project. I finished the modelling the Tang Dao and textured the asset in Substance Painter. The Tang Dao has ended up being my favourite weapon to create so far. Here is an image of the finished asset:

I wanted to keep a sense of continuity and build on what I had learned when creating the previous weapons so I added the lotus image and the grip, from the Guandao, to the Tang Dao. The Tang Dao is used in martial arts and sometimes has the addition of a rope/ribbon at the end that is utilised when fighting. I thought this was cool and decided to add a ring as the pommel. For this asset I decided to go for a more contrasting look so I made the blade and sheath/scabbard a dark colour and the trimming (pommel, guard, and decoration) a light silver metal.

I had a talk with my tutors on my plans going forward about whether I am planning to continue the project and add more weapons or finish the project. With some careful consideration, I decided it would be best to bring this project to an end and move on to something else. After making the decision, I now had to think of how I was going to present the assets. I could display them on that stand that I created, as you have seen in the images I have posted, but that would be boring. After some suggestions and looking at some images, I researched some structures that have cultural and/or historical importance in Chinese culture and created a simple backdrop to go behind the assets. I chose to create a Chinese pagoda, a platform, a wall, and floor. I have made the textures seamless so that I can duplicate the assets and make a larger scene to help display my assets. I kept the poly count, colours, and style simple for a few reasons. These were:

1. To not draw the attention away from the weapons too much.

2. To not overcomplicate the production to run into as little issues as possible.

3. To not take too much time as the backdrop is going to be a distance and is not as important to the scene as the weapons.

Here is an image of the backdrop assets:

My plan for next week is to work on the composition of my scene and finish this project.
